The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold a demonstration today, Tuesday, November 3, to protest alleged corruption, lack of transparency and what it describes as the government’s failure to honour key campaign promises made to Ghanaians. The protest, dubbed the “Yegyeyɛ Sika Demo,” is expected to attract party members and supporters, particularly the youth, who will be demanding accountability from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration over issues of national concern.
A key issue expected to feature prominently in the demonstration is the demand for transparency over the government’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa. The NPP youth wing is calling for a comprehensive account of the funds reportedly allocated to the operation. The protest will also draw attention to concerns over the management of public resources and what the organisers describe as inconsistencies in the government’s handling of financial matters.
According to the NPP youth wing, the demonstration is part of efforts to ensure that the NDC administration accounts for its decisions and that public officials uphold transparency and accountability in the management of state affairs.
Speaking to Citi News ahead of the protest, the NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser, Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu, urged young Ghanaians to join the demonstration, arguing that citizens must not remain silent when questions arise over the use of public funds.
He said the NPP youth wing, acting as a responsible opposition force, was leading calls for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to account for the GH¢49.7 million reportedly allocated to the evacuation exercise.
Amekplenu further questioned whether discrepancies in the figures could have resulted from a transposition or accounting error, insisting that the public deserved clarity on the actual status of the funds. “We want to know the true status of that money. Was there any error of transposition? Was there any accounting error in the course of balancing the account? We want to know,” he said.
