Russia has promised to support Ghana’s application to join the BRICS bloc as a partner country. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov assured that he would work to gain the backing of the group’s founding members for the West African nation. This information was shared by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 28, following a breakfast meeting with Lavrov and other African foreign ministers at the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit.
Ablakwa stated that Lavrov expressed Moscow’s commitment to engage with other BRICS founding members to secure their support for Ghana’s application. Ghana announced its intention to join BRICS on October 6, 2026, after Cabinet approval. This announcement was made during a joint press briefing with India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in Accra. Ghana is seeking partner-country status as part of its efforts to diversify its economic and diplomatic connections.
This development could enhance Ghana’s ability to broaden its international partnerships and explore additional avenues for economic cooperation, as the country aims to diversify its development options. Ablakwa emphasised that the government would continue pursuing partnerships that align with the country’s national interests while maintaining its established diplomatic approach.
BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping of major emerging economies that seeks to strengthen economic cooperation and coordination among its members. The partner-country framework allows for closer engagement with countries that are not full members.
