The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has disclosed that the 161kV Anwomaso-Ahodwo (K1-K2) Transmission Line Upgrade Project in Kumasi is now 70 per cent complete, with planned power interruptions expected in some communities from Friday, October 30, 2026.
The project, which is being jointly executed by GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026.
In a joint statement, the two power sector institutions said the upgrade is intended to reinforce the electricity transmission network and enhance the reliability of power supply in Kumasi and neighbouring communities.
They explained that the project has entered a crucial phase involving the installation of transmission conductors on the towers. This stage requires temporary power interruptions to guarantee the safety of engineers, construction workers and the general public.
Consequently, communities located along the transmission line route are expected to experience scheduled outages from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, 2026. However, the interruptions will not take place on weekends. On designated working days, affected areas will experience outages between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., depending on the progress of work along the respective sections of the line.
ECG is expected to release a detailed outage timetable outlining the affected communities and specific dates of interruption to allow residents, businesses and other electricity consumers to plan accordingly.
GRIDCo and ECG have appealed to residents and businesses in the affected areas to remain patient and cooperate with the project teams throughout the exercise.
While acknowledging that the temporary outages may inconvenience households, disrupt business activities and affect other essential services, the two institutions emphasised that the interruptions are necessary to ensure the safe and successful completion of the upgrade.
Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly strengthen the electricity transmission infrastructure and improve the stability and reliability of power supply across Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.
