GH₵500,000 debt allegedly linked to the killing of uncle and niece at Sakumono

Two people, an uncle and his niece, have been shot dead at NTHC Estate in Sakumono following an alleged dispute over a GH¢500,000 debt. The deceased have been identified as 57-year-old George Atubiga and his 47-year-old niece, Irene Atubiga. The incident occurred on Friday, October 30, 2026, following a confrontation at their residence involving a suspect identified by the police as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto.

In a statement, the Accra Regional Police Command disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was linked to a financial disagreement between George Atubiga and the suspect. George allegedly owed the suspect GH¢500,000, which he had reportedly failed to repay. According to the police, the suspect, accompanied by a woman identified as Beatrice Mumuni, visited the victims’ residence on the morning of the incident to demand repayment of the money. However, a disagreement reportedly broke out during the encounter, resulting in the suspect allegedly opening fire on George and his niece.

The two victims were immediately rushed to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead by a medical officer. Their bodies have since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The Baatsona Divisional Police Command has commenced investigations into the incident, while the Accra Regional Police Command says efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect.

The police have also appealed to members of the public with relevant information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. Meanwhile, investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
