Dr. Bernard Oko‑Boye, newly elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to reunite the party and integrate defeated aspirants into his administration as he works to rebuild its electoral fortunes in the region.
Oko‑Boye secured the chairmanship with 490 votes, defeating Alfred Boye, who garnered 172. Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, August 17, he said the scale of his victory reflected delegates’ desire for a new style of leadership that would strengthen ties with the grassroots. His immediate priority, he noted, is to engage party members and voters to understand their concerns and design programmes that address them. “Delegates want new leadership—one that is closer to them,” he stated.
He revealed plans to meet Alfred Boye and other unsuccessful aspirants before the end of the week to begin the process of unifying the regional party. “We need the energy, resources, and passion of every patriot and every party member so that our gains are restored in a convincing manner,” he said. He said the party needed to reconcile internally before attempting to persuade voters outside the party to return to the NPP.
“We have to convince our own brothers and sisters in the family to come on board before we try to go out to bring others,” he said. The NPP suffered significant losses in Greater Accra during the 2024 general election, reducing its parliamentary representation in the region to five seats.
Oko-Boye said restoring the party’s fortunes in Greater Accra would require close engagement with both party delegates and voters. He also pledged to work towards the return of the NPP to power in 2028 under the leadership of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
